Nick Wrack Successfully Defends Gaza Protestor |
|
Violent Disorder charges dropped after missing film footage uncovered. Nick Wrack, instructed by Matt Foot of Birnberg Peirce & Partners Solicitors, represented Jake Smith, a 23 year old graduate with no convictions, who was charged with two serious offences of Violent Disorder. Jake Smith was arrested on 10 January 2009 following demonstrations outside the Israeli embassy in London against the Israeli invasion of Gaza. Fourteen months later, on the eve of trial, the prosecution dropped both charges due to video evidence that showed that Jake had been the victim of a violent assault. Despite the police having had the evidence for all that time, it was not revealed to the defence until days before the trial. Many protestors have received heavy prison sentences. Film showing Jake being assaulted by the police appeared on Youtube but the police had their own film of the same incident, which they kept to themselves until the last minute.
