Tooks Team Receives Special Recognition at 2009 Bar Pro Bono Awards

A Tooks team, consisting of Paul Troop, Jude Bunting, James Mehigan, Richard Reynolds, Fouzia Khan and Greg O’Ceallaigh, was one of three nominees to be given special recognition at the award ceremony on 7 November 2009.

The Bar Pro Bono Award is given to an individual barrister or set of chambers in recognition of outstanding commitment to pro bono work. Of the 11 nominees for the 2009 award, three were given special recognition. The award was won by Andrew Walker of Maitland Chambers.
The Tooks team are still working to seek justice for the families of individuals killed or injured by a UN operated police force at a demonstration in Pristina, Kosovo in February 2007. A UN Prosecutor conducted an internal review and found the shootings to be unnecessary and avoidable yet no one was held accountable. The only legal route accessible was an application to the Human Rights Advisory Panel. The team took on the case pro bono and spent a large amount of time in Kosovo and in the UK collating evidence, demonstrating that the case was admissible, preparing submissions for the Panel and presenting these. A final decision is awaited.
