High Court Orders Release of Somali Asylum Seeker After Three Years in Detention Awaiting Deportation

Ahmed Daq, a Somali citizen who had been given humanitarian leave to remain in the UK but was subject to deportation measures on account of a long history of drug-related crime including robbery and burglary, was ordered to be released by the High Court on Friday

Detention for in excess of three years with no prospect of deportation in sight had become unlawful, said the judge and ordered release subject to ‘stringent conditions' notwithstanding the risk he continued to pose to the public.

Mr Daq was represented by Katie Brown of Pierce Glynn Solicitors and Amanda Weston of Tooks Chambers.
