- Gaza Protest Sentences Cut
A group of Tooks lawyers scored a notable victory in the Court of Appeal on July 13th when Joel Bennathan QC, Garry Green, Sam Robinson, Sultana Tafadar and Srikantharajah Nereshraaj represented 6 out of the 10 protesters who were before the court.

- Kirsty Scamp Freed
After a campaign by Justice for Women, Kirsty Scamp's appeal against her murder conviction reached the court of Appeal on 21st July. In 2006 she had stabbed her violent boyfriend as he attacked her in their home. The Court quashed the murder conviction and substituted one of manslaughter, varying the sentence to allow for her immediate release.

- UN Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia Appeals Tribunal Orders Retrial
The UNICTY Appeals Tribunal today ordered the retrial of the three co-defendants in the case of Prosecutor v Haradinaj et al.

- Leave to Appeal Given in Landmark Torture Case
On 30th June Rangzieb Ahmed, the only man ever convicted of directing Al Qaeda operations in the UK was given leave to appeal against his convictions. The grounds include the allegation that British complicity in his torture in Pakistan was so unconscionable that his trial should never have been allowed to take place.

- Belfast Jury Acquits "Raytheon 9" of Attempting to Damage Arms Factory during Gaza Conflict
9 women accused of offences related to attempted damage to an arms factory in Derry during the Israel Gaza conflict have been acquitted by a jury in Belfast Crown Court.

- Michael Mansfield on the Jury Panel of the Russell Tribunal
Michael Mansfield is a member of the jury panel on the Russell Tribunal inquiry into the legal ramifications of Israel's human rights and humanitarian law violations in Palestine. Part 1 was heard in Barcelona in March 2010. There are to be four more hearings, the next in London later in the year.

Hugh Southey QC and Adam Straw acted for JF who successfully argued before the Supreme Court that the lack of a review mechanism meant that sex offender registration breached article 8.

Dr Sameer Sarkar had been dismissed from his position at Broadmoor for non clinical reasons. The Employment Tribunal had held that his employers had acted unreasonably in sabotaging an internal initial resolution but that had been overturned by the EAT.

- Nick Wrack Represents Anti War Soldier Joe Glenton
Anti War Soldier Joe Glenton was sentenced today to nine months detention for refusing to do a second tour of duty in Afghanistan. Lance Corporal Glenton was initially charged with desertion but this charge was dropped and he pleaded guilty to being Absent Without Leave for over two years. He had planned to contest the desertion charge by arguing that the Afghan war was illegal.

- Chris Williams Represents the Family of a Remand Prisoner Who Was Unlawfully Killed
A Leeds Inquest Jury found that a remand prisoner had been unlawfully killed.The inquest into the death, in 2006, of Michael Clegg lasted 5 weeks. The jury’s verdict was highly critical of cell sharing risk assessments at HMP Leeds identifying some 30 systemic failures.
